Schoolcraft's Ozark Journey

Near Taneyville (Helphrey Hill)

Monday, December 28th, 1818

This morning we commenced our journey towards the north, accompanied by Holt and Fisher, both on horseback, and provided with rifles. Holt goes as guide, being acquainted with the regions we are about to visit, and both are expert hunters, so that we are neither under apprehensions of losing our way, or suffering for want of provisions. The weather is chilly and unsettled. Travelled ten miles, and encamped in a valley at dusk. Killed one deer.
